Become a Trustee or Governor
Volunteering in the education sector requires time and commitment but is one of the most interesting and rewarding contributions you can make to your community.
The role of trustees and governors is different. Trustees set the trust’s vision and strategy, agree the budget and appoint key staff. Trustees and governors monitor the implementation of the strategy – but governors focus on how it is impacting on their own school. This means that trustees develop strong and effective relationships with the trust’s senior executive team while governors develop strong and effective relationships with their school’s headteacher and deputies. We know that building these relationships is one of the most rewarding aspects of the role.
Our trust aims to recruit a diverse group of trustees and governors. This is to ensure that there is a good representation of educational, business and local interests, and so that the trust can benefit from a wide range of knowledge, skills and, importantly, life experiences.
Our current board of trustees bring expertise from a range of professional backgrounds including accountancy, audit, legal, property management, human resources, special needs, school leadership and governance. Many of our governors also have a range of professional skills and life experiences but they are specifically recruited from their school’s immediate community and include elected staff and parent representatives.
Because vacancies arise and we are also mindful of succession planning, especially as we have limits on the number of terms of office trustees and governors can serve, we are always interested in approaches from possible trustees and local governors.
The recruitment pack below aims to explain how governance works in the trust and to give you enough information to decide if you would like to be considered as a trustee or local governor.
If you would like any further information, please contact the trust’s Lead Governance Professional, Cheryl Adams at c.adams@beacon-academy.org, who will be very happy to answer your questions.
